In continuing with the present example, theory requires one to address utilization and manipulation of the space environment to achieve national political goals. Due to the broad and overarching topics that can be covered by the study of space theory, this additional level of descriptive detail becomes essential. This works along with definition in that it further delineates what is to be studied and differentiates like and unlike concepts. The second task of theory is categorization. For example, this article is concerned with theories relating to space, distinguishing it from other environments like air, land, or sea. The first is to “define the field of study under investigation,” separating and clarifying the realm of thinking for the discussion. For example, in the second chapter, “On the Nature of Military Theory,” Harold Winton explains there are five components to any strong theory. The edited work Toward a Theory of Spacepower presents differing perspectives from multiple scholars which contributes to a diverse body of knowledge. One definition of theory is “an explanation of a phenomenon arrived at through examination and contemplation of the relevant facts a statement of one or more laws or principles which are generally held as describing an essential property of something.” Such a definition captures the fundamental attributes necessary to understand where to start. For these goals to be met, Clausewitz stressed the importance of clear and simple definitions before attempting to create a theory. To that end, Vego also mentions that theory serves to clarify concepts or ideas and understand the past on a more broad and strategic level. For this reason, military commanders need creative and flexible thoughts and actions to be successful in future conflicts. Milan Vego references Clausewitz numerous times in his article “On Military Theory,” suggesting, “Military theory should develop a way of thinking rather than prescribe rules of war.”Ī factor contributing to the uncertainty of war is that no two wartime conflicts are exactly alike. Despite being first published posthumously in 1832, that his instrumental theory of strategy serving policy is still widely cited serves as a testament to its significance and continued relevance. Written by Carl Von Clausewitz, On War provided the world with an in-depth analysis of the strategy of war. ![]() Toward that end, this article reviews current theory and, it is to be hoped, provides the next space theorist an adequate starting point which might assist in creating a lasting and universally accepted unified theory of spacepower.īefore someone can commit to creating a theory, it is crucial to understand why a unified theory on space power is necessary in the first place. ![]() ![]() This problem is one of the many with which the United States must wrestle as it seeks to create an independent space service. Currently, no unified or coherent space theory exists directing how the domain should be controlled and utilized. Today is no different, and new technological capabilities raise the question, “How can space be utilized most effectively on a global scale?” As countries scramble to develop and maintain space assets, as well as compete with each other for advantage and prestige, a lack of order and regulation remains within the space domain. ![]() The mystery of space has always been the subject of intrigue and wonder for mankind.
